I got a out-of-state referral the other day from another Agent for a couple needing to relocate to the Northern Virginia area. The husband is retiring from the military after serving 20 years. The wife is a home maker and looks after their young son. He has accepted a job in the area and begins in the first part of September.
These folks had truly lived the "military state shuffle", one year in this state, two years in another one, literally criss-crossing the United States and also overseas all the while living in military housing.
Well, I had been talking with the husband for a couple of days now and got a pretty good idea of the type of home they were looking for, cost, amenities, etc. and followed up with him by e-mailing him some listings. After a few brief exchanges, he and his wife decided to make the trip from New England down here to Virginia. They were interested in seeing five homes. Although, the homes were spread out across the region I had already used Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/) to plan the route and my Magellan GPS was ready to lead the way. We piled into my car and hit the road. The first home we looked at was nice they liked it and thought it was ok. The next two we pulled up to were in a hilly terrain area were the gravel streets were washed out and they had really steep hills that would be treacherous in the winter time. We pressed on. As we neared the fourth house I could feel their anxiety building. Here they drove almost 14 hours to get here and they were somewhat dissappointed by the homes they looked at. Those Internet photos they looked at doesn't show all the other things like the huge embankment next to the driveway, washed out roads, yards that have steep declines, etc. Then I thought we hit the jackpot...we rolled up to a brand new house 3 bedrooms with 2 bath and a two car garage. His wife, insisted "this is the one!" but, he said "no, honey I can't ride my motorcycle into work across these gravel roads". She was pretty bummed and so was their son. That left only one more home for them to see. It was across town in a private resort community that had a lake, playground and park.
This home sat up high on a hill with the most spectacular view of the shenandoah mountains and the lake below like you have never seen. They were in love! "We'll take it" they both exclaimed. Man, I love to hear those words! hehe :-)
We drove back to my office where I wrote up the offer. Then a few hours ago I received a call from the Listing Agent who said his Client's were ok with the terms and were unlikely to counter. Immediately, I called my folks and told them the good news. They were absolutely delighted! We settle in two weeks and my folks couldn't be happier. I'm choosing not to share with you their comments but I can assure you, I was overwhelmed and touched by their appreciation. I made a difference in this family's lives. They can finally purchase their first home - a home they can truly call theirs.
